Where you can find the best brews in Manchester

By , 18th June 2015

Manchester is a haven for tea lovers: with everything from boutique brews in hipster cafés to sophisticated high tea in luxury hotels, the city is fighting back against the rise of corporate coffee. A burgeoning ‘tea quarter’ is even in development in the city’s Gay Village.

So whether you’re looking for a classy celebration with the girls or a quick tea and scone, here’s an expert look at the best places for tea lovers in Manchester.

Tea 42

58 HIGH STREET, M4 1EF

Tea rooms Manchester: Tea 42

Moving away from the twee and kitsch feel of some tea rooms, Tea42 is a fresh, modern café catering to tea aficionados and foodies alike. Tea42 has an extensive selection of blends and high tea options, but it’s the free-from menus that really set this place apart: the café’s dairy-free and gluten-free options have seen it voted the best free-from coffee and tea shop in the UK.

Tea42’s success will see it open another location in the Gay Village later in the year.

Richmond Tea Rooms

RICHMOND STREET, M1 3HZ

Tea in Manchester: Richmond Tea Rooms

In Manchester’s Gay Village you’ll find the Richmond Tea Rooms. This popular staple embraces a quirky alternative interior, taking inspiration from the unique style of director Tim Burton and Alice in Wonderland. Visitors will find a range of speciality teas and light bites on offer, as well as afternoon tea and a breakfast menu.

Richmond Tea Rooms were recently voted the best in Manchester by the Manchester Food and Drink Festival 2015.

Tea Hive

53 MANCHESTER ROAD, CHORLTON, M21 9PW

Found in the cool suburb of Chorlton, Tea Hive is a cosy and welcoming tea shop. Popular with locals, the café has a strong community atmosphere and regularly hosts supper clubs and other events. Inside, guests will find an eclectic collection of vintage furniture and modern décor, while outside there is a small patio and seating area. Guests can enjoy a full range of teas and treats including brunch, sandwiches and cakes.

Vegan, wheat- and gluten-free afternoon teas are easily catered for with 24 hours’ notice.

Teacup

53-55 THOMAS STREET, M4 1NA

Teacup Manchester

Hugely popular, hipster hangout Teacup Kitchen draws in a big crowd at weekends – often with a queue for a table. In addition to teas, Teacup offers a large range of unique and speciality cakes, while each pot is served with an hourglass to help you brew the perfect cup.

Teacup is found on Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter, the heart of bohemian life in Manchester.

Top tip: Instagram lovers should definitely order a slice of the photogenic rainbow cake.

Sugar Junction Tearooms

60 TIB STREET, M4 1LG

Tea in Manchester

Born under the adage of ‘all you need is cake’ (something I’ve personally been preaching for years), Sugar Junction is another popular option in the Northern Quarter. The café’s teas are specially blended and include two exclusive flavours: Chinese gunpowder and Northern Quarter blend. In addition to good brews, guests will find a full food menu and a variety of ice-cream milkshakes.

Top tip: looking for something stronger after your tea? Try the cocktail and cake combo for £7.

The Lowry

50 DEARMANS PLACE, SALFORD M3 5LH

The Lowry: Afternoon tea in Manchester

One of Manchester’s most sought-after hotels, The Lowry is a haven of luxury – something that is reflected in its afternoon tea. Featuring classic ingredients with a contemporary twist, the afternoon tea consists of finger sandwiches, scones and clotted cream, pastries, fancies and a choice of tea blends, infusions and Champagne.

The Lowry’s esteemed restaurant, The River Bar & Grill, is a recent recipient of an Excellence Award from the British Tea Guild.
