The best European Game of Thrones filming locations

The excitement is palpable! Millions of Game of Thrones fans are waiting with baited breath for this season’s premiere. Will we find out the fate of Jon Snow? Will Westeros survive the onslaught as the White Walkers prepare to breach the wall? Only time will tell…

But to ease our excitement, we’ve handpicked our favourite Game of Thrones filming locations from previous seasons, as well as featuring some new and upcoming destinations so you can relieve the glory of battles past!

Real Alcázar

Seville, Spain

Seville’s Real Alcázar must have been at the top of the wish-list, when producers were looking for the perfect location to replicate the Water Gardens of Dorne. The 14th century Moorish palace was the ideal choice to represent the home of House Martell, with exotic interiors, luscious gardens, orchards and intricate ponds and fountains found throughout the palace grounds.

Hotel Alfonso Xlll

If you, or a fellow Sand Snake want to sleep like Dornish royalty, why not spend a night at the Hotel Alfonso Xlll? Situated opposite the Real Alcázar, guests can relax in stunning Arabic-inspired surroundings, lounge by the hotel’s outdoor pool or even take a meandering walk through the hotel gardens.

Castillo de Zafra

Guadalajara, Spain

Reportedly a stand-in for the infamous Tower of Joy, Castillo de Zafra is set to play a big part in Game of Thrones history if the gossip is to be believed. Fans of the books will know that the late-great Ned Stark fought a fierce battle against the Kingsguard here and according to fan-theory promised his dying sister to raise her son (Jon Snow) as his own.

A short drive from Castillo de Zafra, fans can check in to their own secluded retreat. Housed in a former monastery, Parador de Cuenca’s ornate interior design with grand archways, staircases and high ceilings is the ideal game-of-thrones inspired Spanish get-away.

This season, Castell de Santa Florentina will be transformed into Horn Hill – Sam’s family castle. With reports of the cast and crew filming within the castle and its grounds, fans will be on tenterhooks to find out what drama will unfold for Sam and Gilly in House Tarly.

Simply iconic, The Dark Hedges is one of the best Game of Thrones filming locations to visit in Northern Ireland and for fans in the know, the atmospheric road is instantly recognizable as King’s Road. In season 2, our heroine Arya Stark escaped Kings Landing and, disguised as a boy, made her way north on King’s Road towards the Night’s Watch.
